KEEP OUR WORLD ALIVE

For this week’s blog, I decided to write about three ways we can all help the world’s environment by doing simple things in our daily lives.

1. The first way we can help the environment is by taking shorter showers. A lot of us might take showers up to 30 minutes long (I confess – sometimes I can go even longer). By taking a 10-minute shower we can save many litres of water. Water is one of the world’s most precious resources and we save both the fresh water supply and on energy when we cut down on our water use. The shower is one of the places where teenagers use the most water and by significantly reducing our daily time in the shower we can have a big effect on our total water usage. Some people even go as far as cutting back to a single short shower per week. This may seem like going too far, but if you can stand the smell you will help the planet!

2. As you know a lot of grocery stores now charge $0.05 for each plastic grocery bag. They are doing their part to help the environment, by charging for bags so to try and reduce our use of them. Plastic bags are produced from petroleum and the billions of plastic grocery bags produced and used each year wastes the planet’s precious petroleum supply. Plastic bags are also very hard to recycle and they add up to a big environmental pollution source. We all can easily help to reduce our use of plastic grocery bags by either using reusable fabric grocery bags instead of plastic bags, or by taking back your used plastic bags and reusing them many times over.

3. Our uncontrolled use of energy is one of our biggest current problems. Those of us living in the developed world use 5 to 10 times the amount of energy as people in the developing world. Finding a truly sustainable energy supply is still not in view and the burning of fossil fuel for energy production is killing our planet through global warming. It’s really important that all of us find daily ways to cut our energy usage. Some of the most important ways of cutting energy use are small, but they add up to great savings over time. One way each of us can help cut energy use is to make a habit of turning off the lights in every room we leave every time we leave it. Reducing our electricity use by turning off lights in empty rooms may seem like a small thing, but it really adds up over a year. If we all made this a habit we could greatly reduce our national energy use. Also remember to turn all the lights off in your house when you leave for a family vacation.

By doing these 3 simple things each day we can help our world reduce its total energy waste, petroleum use and pollution production. Reducing our energy use and pollution production is critical because of the rising global CO2 levels. Increasing CO2 levels is causing an increase in the surface temperature of the earth and this will cause very damaging change to our planet’s climate and oceans. If each of us could do small acts everyday like taking shorter showers, using reusable or used grocery bags, and by turning off room lights when we leave the rooms, we can have a very positive effect on the world’s environment. Little steps taken everyday can add up to a big changes if we only try.

Did You Know???

Don't you find it weird if American's made this video, yet they are making fun of themselves. If Americans' are saying that they are stupid then how could they come up with all of these statistics? The internet, in the next year the computer will be smarter than a human brain. For some of you it may be hard to believe, but its true. Soon china will be the number one english speaking country in the world. Even though some countries main language is english??? Does this make any sense to you???
If you where in China you would be one in a million, but in the USA there's 1300 other people just like you. Is India really smarter then the USA??? How are we supposed to know if these statistics are true??? As the internet is getting larger more resources are created, but many may be false. Possible the people who made this video could have been using false resources.

Norval

We took a day off school to go to a team-building place called Norval. It was fun because we got to do all sorts of activities like the Inuit blanket toss, mission impossible, the wall, and a drum circle.

With the Inuit blanket toss, one person sat in the middle while everyone else pulled on the edges. The person in the middle would be propelled into the air. You would have to trust everyone around to not let you hit the ground when you came down. I was the first one to go. It was a lot of fun because of the felling of being thrown up in the air.

Mission impossible was by far my most favourite activity. For mission impossible one person would have a full body harness on while everyone else was on four different ropes. The ropes where attached to the harness. Four balls where scattered across a small area and the people holding the ropes had to pull you toward the balls and you had to pick them all up. This activity was the best for me because everyone pulled me up as high into the air as the ropes could go.

The wall was one of the most challenging because everyone in their group had to get over a fourteen-foot wall. Three people where allowed to be on the platform on the other side. Everyone had to be doing a job, even if it was spotting or lifting people over the wall. It was a difficult challenge but we managed to get our whole group over. Altogether it was a really fun day.

The Little Things That Matter The Most

The little things in life are the things that you will remember. Like when I walk into my front door of my house and my dog Mae is there to see me, having a home to sleep in, having parents that take care of me, when I am sick there is a doctor you go see. We all have loving families that cheer us up when we are down.

 my dog Mae

Little stones make big piles

Little steps can cover miles

Little acts of loving-kindness

Give the world its biggest smiles

Little words can sooth big troubles

Little hugs can dry big tears

Little candles can spread much light

Little memories last forever

Little dreams can change the world

Little victories to success

It's the little things in life

That brings the greatest happiness
